History of DEI

Diversity Education Initiatives (originally named the Diversity Institute) was established in 1995 in the Center for Social Work Research as a collaborative, multidisciplinary project of faculty, staff, students, and community members based in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin.  In the fall of 2007, the Diversity Institute was newly housed under the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and renamed the Diversity Education Institute to emphasize its new focus on educating the community about social justice issues and supporting educators working in this area. In 2011 the Diversity Education Institute was renamed Diversity Education Initiatives, reflecting the broader reach of educational programming occurring throughout the division, at the University and in the community.
