Student Diversity Initiatives

Student Diversity Initiatives (SDI) envisions a campus where proud, well-rounded and academically successful students are equipped with the skills necessary to advance social justice work through education, engagement and action. SDI includes the Multicultural Engagement Center and the Gender and Sexuality Center: Serving Women and LGBTQA Communities. SDI centers work with students to create safe spaces where they can pursue academic interests, develop leadership skills, and advocate for their communities. Through social justice education and community building, SDI programs empower students to challenge inequity, marginalization and injustice.

Ana “Ixchel” Rosal

Ixchel Rosal has over twenty years of experience providing organizational leadership. She currently serves as the executive director of Student Diversity Initiatives where she has oversight over the Gender and Sexuality Center: Serving Women and LGBTQ Communities and the Multicultural Engagement Center. Both units are student resource centers within UT’s Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. Through her work with these units, Ixchel has developed a focus within student affairs on student leadership and identity development, as well as campus climate issues. Prior to her tenure in higher education, Ixchel was a community cultural development worker; she worked with community-based organizations and used the arts and other forms of cultural production to build capacity within historically marginalized communities. During this time, she was awarded a fellowship at the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as through the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture. Ixchel has also worked as a diversity educator, strategic planning consultant, and grant writer. She received her training as a diversity educator through TODOS: Sherover Simms Alliance Building Institute (Oakland, CA). Among the organizations she has worked with as a consultant are: Texas Council on Family Violence, YWCA, Austin Children’s Museum, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Latino USA, Rude Mechanicals Theater Company, and the Austin African American Cultural Heritage District. Originally from California, Ixchel received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. After moving to Texas, she received her Master’s in Public Policy from the LBJ School at the University of Texas, Austin.  In addition to her work at the university, Ixchel serves as an Advisory Circle member of Mamas of Color Rising, a community-based coalition of mothers advocating for improved birthing conditions for low-income women of color.

Mary BotelloMary Botello

Senior Administrative Assistant

Mary Botello is an Austin, Texas native. She graduated from Johnston High School in 1971. Upon graduation, Mary worked for the State of Texas and the City of Austin for over 30 years. She became a UT employee in 2003 when she was hired by the Neighborhood Longhorns Program. She was then promoted to Administrative Associate for the Business Services Unit and in 2007 her unit merged with the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) under Vice President Dr. Gregory Vincent. She worked in DDCE’s Chief of Staff’s office until November of 2013 when she was transferred to Student Diversity Initiatives as a Senior Administrative Assistant. Other than work, Mary enjoys spending time with her family and dancing to Tejano music. She vows to always be a Longhorn fan.
