Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement, was one of seven educators and community leaders and 250 African American middle and high school students honored by Austin Independent School District (AISD) on Saturday. Special recognition was given to 11 high school seniors designated as African American High School Scholars. The awards were given during the district’s 27th Annual African American Heritage Celebration at the Delco Activity Center. Entertainment and inspiration were provided by student choirs and dance groups from the host school, Travis High School.
The following community leaders and educators received the 2010 Spirit of Giving Award:
• Senior Officer Eric Oakman, Austin Police Department
• Sheryl Cole, Austin City Council Member
• Dr. Glenn Nolly, AISD Associate Superintendent for High Schools
• Judge Samuel T. Biscoe, Travis County Commissioners Court
• Dr. Gregory J. Vincent, Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement for the University of Texas at Austin
• Gwendolyn Robinson Greene, director, AISD Adult Education and English Language Learners
• Katrina Hicks, Distinguished Teacher from Martin Middle School
Dr. Vincent said, “I was honored to be included among these upstanding educators and community leaders and the student honorees who are among the best and brightest young people in Austin.”
