Austin City Council Passes Resolution Supporting Marriage Equality

September 28, 2012

On Thursday morning the Austin City Council passed a resolution to support marriage equality in the city. The resolution was sponsored by Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole and co-sponsored by Mayor Lee Leffingwell. Although the council cannot overturn the state’s law against marriage equality, Cole was quoted as saying that from experience they knew such symbolic acts matter and can make a difference. Leffingwell said, “We have a robust and diverse LGBT community in Austin and I am proud to stand with them and defend their right to equal marriage.” Read more in Austin Culture Map and in the Austin American Statesman.
