The University Interscholastic League (UIL) has gained several new staff members. Lisa Atkins joined the Academics team in September as administrative associate.
In her role, she works with the Speech and Debate and A+ Academics programs. Debate is UIL’s oldest contest, and A+ Academics, includes 19 different events for grades 2-8. Lisa collaborates with member schools to collect their meet information, provide materials, and assists with conference planning and on-site event management.
The school year is a busy time in her office, especially spring break, which is when the state meet is held.
Before joining UIL, Lisa taught sophomore English for five years at Lehman High School in Kyle. She likes that she gets to continue working with schools.
“I really wanted to be in a position to support teachers and students as much as possible,” she said. “I like working for an organization that does really good things for schools. I saw as a teacher what UIL does to help all schools and teachers and the community.”
While Lisa worked in Kyle she actually lived in Austin, and recently bought a house in East Austin. She enjoys reading, traveling, crafts and running with her dog. Exercise is a major part of her weekly routine. As a member of Danes Body Shop she and 20 others actively participate in boot camp, a combination of circuit, running, pushups, pull-ups and box jumps. She trains between 5-6 a.m. three mornings a week. She says it’s a lot of fun.
Lisa attended the University of North Texas in Denton and is originally from Amarillo.
