May 19: Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt

May 2, 2013

This year the Jewish Federation of Greater Austin joins with the Austin Hindu Community and the Hindu Charities for America to present “Bollywood Meets Borscht Belt” on Sunday, May 19 from 5 – 8 PM in the Community Hall of the Dell Jewish Community Campus, 7300 Hart Ln., Austin, TX, 78731. This event is a joint fund raiser and cultural exchange party to provide school supplies for disadvantaged kids in the Manor and AISD School Districts. Each $18 donated provides a backpack of school supplies to one child. The event seeks to raise about $15,000 while nurturing cultural learning about one another’s religions.

This family friendly event will provide a vegetarian Indian main course dinner with Jewish desserts, and activities for children and adults including music and dancing performances as well as audience participation. The admission charge is being kept low to enable more folks to attend (adults $18, kids under age 13, $6.) As of today, the following Indian restaurant has agreed to sponsor food: Bombay Bistro, Chole, Curry In Hurry, Inchins Bamboo Garden, Madras Pavilion (Kosher), Persis Indian Grill, Sarovar Indian Cuisine, Shirdi Sai Baba Temple, Star of India, Teji’s food, Whip In Convenience Store.

While the economy in Texas appears to be thriving, there remain nearly 96,000 K-12 students in the state who are homeless. Many live in central Texas. You are invited to enjoy this multi-cultural event that will also assist these students in need.
