The Longhorn Center for Civic Engagement is seeking volunteers for the Be the Change National Day of Service (bethechangeaustin.org) on Sunday, September 29th!
Be the Change is an annual national day of service coordinated by South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) to inspire and foster civic engagement through volunteerism and community service.
Every year, thousands of participants across the country contribute innumerable hours of community service in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” The 2013 theme for Be the Change is “Stand Together, Serve Together” which showcases how individuals give back to their communities in the spirit of service and their commitment to creating lasting change beyond Be The Change 2013.
For the Austin community, the goal is to mobilize 1,000 volunteers (college students, local residents and families) to serve at 50 service sites throughout Austin on Sunday, September 29th.
Kickoff for the event will be held from 8:30am to 10:30am at Gregory Plaza on the UT campus, with Samip Mallick (photo below) serving as keynote speaker. Mallick is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the South Asian American Digital Archive.
The South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA) is the only independent non-profit organization working to document the rich history of South Asians in the United States and ensuring that the stories of the South Asian American community are protected and preserved for future generations. The kickoff will also feature a performance by Hum Acapella Group.
