East Avenue Project
Racial Segregation and the City of Austin
The stretch of I-35 that now runs through downtown Austin was once known as East Avenue. This was the simple yet crude divide between white Austinites to the west and the black and brown community to the east. It is also the name of a new collaborative project with the African American Cultural Heritage District, UT students and faculty, and other community partners that examines the past, present and future of segregation in the City of Austin.
The projects goals are to link past patterns and forms of geographic discrimination with present inequities, and to propose recommendations for community groups and civic leaders.
The East Avenue Project is exceedingly relevant, as data shows that African-Americans are Austin’s only shrinking ethnic group in an otherwise rapidly growing city.
